Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Rivals
March 28th to November 1th 2026
Early 20th-century Vienna was the scene of a unique rivalry between two exceptional artists in a race for fame and recognition. In the exhibition “Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Rivals”, the Egon Schiele Museum, in cooperation with the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn, presents an exploration of the life and work of the two artists who significantly shaped Austrian Expressionism.
The exhibition guides the viewer through Schiele's and Kokoschka's beginnings, their far-reaching networks, and their individual war experiences. In 1918, both claimed to be Klimt's legitimate successor. Shortly afterwards, Schiele died at the age of only 28. But the rivalry continued for another six decades with Kokoschka, who could never escape Schiele's shadow.
