Schools

We cordially invite our young museum visitors to approach the man Egon Schiele through their own thoughts and questions. Our experienced art education team uses a great deal of empathy to create playful approaches, set exciting tasks and provide age-appropriate background information.

The use of various educational materials (auditory, visual, haptic) and the inclusion of different forms of art expression are intended to encourage pupils to find their own personal approach to Egon Schiele's life and work. We offer age-specific educational programmes for every school level in the form of educational activities (60 minutes) or educational activities including a studio visit (120 minutes).

The fascination of trains accompanies young Egon

1st–4th grade, 120 minutes

On an exciting journey through the museum, students learn about the childhood of Egon Schiele. At each “station” in his life, the kids will do some pictures, sketches, and drawings which will be collected in a small memory folder.

At the end of the tour, we take time in the atelier to decorate the folder, color in some of the sketches, or start a whole new picture. Depending on our inspiration and mood.

School days – Schiele was not a well-behaved student

Grades 5–8, 60 or 120 minutes

In this museum tour, we delve into the childhood and school days of Egon Schiele – an artist whose tireless urge to paint and draw began in his youth. For students aged 12 to 15, we offer an exciting look at the experiences that shaped Schiele – both the beautiful and the traumatic ones that come to life in his art.

The tour encourages reflection on the importance of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of improvement—values that Schiele embodied in his art. In the creative part of the program, students will try their hand at creating a self-portrait. Whether realistic or abstract, there are no limits to the form of expression.

Coming of age – the young Schiele

Grades 8–13, guided tour 60

On this museum tour, students learn more about Egon Schiele. At just 16 years old, he was the youngest student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he defied authority and went his own way. Students learn about the works Schiele created as a teenager and how his life and family circumstances influenced his art. They are encouraged to think about the challenges Schiele faced and how he responded to adversity. Students can draw parallels to their own lives and ask themselves: How would they have acted in Schiele's situation? An exciting tour that not only brings art history to life but also encourages reflection on self-realization and resistance.

Finally, in the studio, the students try their hand at drawing sketches and preliminary studies, like Egon Schiele, which can be refined with ink or watercolor.
